Wake Up to Your Dreams

A popular sleep medication used this video as a reminder that when you don't sleep, you don't dream. (BTW, I'm not endorsing the drug, the company or anything associated with either.)

It was a terrific campaign but it meant a lot more to me than just sleep. The final tagline is something that has stayed with me for all these years...

Your Dreams Miss You.

It's Time to ReIgnite Your Dreams.

When was the last time the passion for what you want to accomplish in your life burned white hot? When was the last time the thought of your vision and mission in life left you both terrified and electrified? Isn't it time for YOU to create the life, business, or mission you have been called to?

It seems cliche' - but really - you, I - only have one life to live on this planet. We don't get another shot at today. If you don't start moving forward today, when will you begin?

Are you familiar with the Parable of the Talents from Matthew 25:14-30. Here it is in The Message Translation. The part that I really want you to pay attention to is the last verse about playing it safe.

The Story About Investment

14-18 “It’s also like a man going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities. To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left. Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master’s investment. The second did the same. But the man with the single thousand dug a hole and carefully buried his master’s money.

19-21 “After a long absence, the master of those three servants came back and settled up with them. The one given five thousand dollars showed him how he had doubled his investment. His master commended him: ‘Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.’

22-23 “The servant with the two thousand showed how he also had doubled his master’s investment. His master commended him: ‘Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.’

24-25 “The servant given one thousand said, ‘Master, I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error. I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent.’

26-27 “The master was furious. ‘That’s a terrible way to live! It’s criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least? The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest.

28-30 “‘Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this “play-it-safe” who won’t go out on a limb. Throw him out into utter darkness.’

Now understand me clearly. I don't believe you'll go to hell if you don't fulfill your destiny, mission, vision - whatever you call it. What I do believe is that this teaches we have an opportunity to do SOMETHING, even if it seems like a small thing like putting the "money in the bank to get interest."

The true question is are you playing it safe? Are you afraid to go out on a limb? I'm sure you're familiar with this oft referenced Marianne Williamson quote:

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be?

You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

Sometimes we think we have to do a BIG thing to make an impact or difference. Often though, it's one simple step in the right direction that begins to create the momentum. Zechariah 4:10 tells us, "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel's hand." Start the Flame of Your Dreams

Every solid and secure building begins not with a foundation, but with the dirt work to prepare a place for the foundation. The greatest buildings in the world, say for instance the Eiffel Tower, would be nothing but a pile of ruble if the original crew had not taken the time to make sure the foundation UNDER the foundation was right. (Here's a video about the history of the Eiffel Tower if you're interested.)

There is SOMETHING you can do TODAY to create a spark to begin the fire that will launch your dreams. Do you remember the scene from "Castaway" when Tom Hanks FINALLY got the fire to light? It took a lot of work, but it only took two pieces of wood and some dried palm fronds. But ask him, "Was it worth it?" I bet you can guess his answer.

What small "pieces of wood and dried palm fronds"
are in your hand today?

List Your Dreams

The first step is gathering up your dreams like wood for a bonfire. As you begin to think about your dreams, put them down on paper, and categorize them. You're sure to find that some of them can be accomplished with little effort. Others may take a year, and still others may take a lifetime. My question is this, since you are going to get older anyway, why not work toward the dreams and visions that you might be afraid to say out loud?
