Today I’ve really been thinking about the word FREE.
It seems that these days, there always seems to be a condition for FREE.
Webster’s dictionary has 15 (yes 15) definitions for FREE. Those are:
- having the legal and political rights of a citizen
not determined by anything beyond its own nature or being : choosing or capable of choosing for itself
relieved from or lacking something and especially something unpleasant or burdensome
having no trade restrictions
having no obligations (as to work) or commitments
having a scope not restricted by qualification
not obstructed, restricted, or impeded
not costing or charging anything
not united with, attached to, combined with, or mixed with something else
not literal or exact
favorable —used of a wind blowing from a direction more than six points from dead ahead
not allowing slavery
open to all comers
Our frame of reference determines our definition of FREE.
To someone held by slavery by a person or system, FREE means EVERYTHING!
To someone who is looking for a job with little education, definition 6 means EVERYTHING!
What does FREE mean to you today?
The modern church too often shouts from the hills to GIVE UP EVERYTHING for the cross. And again, I suppose that is true up to a point.
But I wonder…if we could more completely see the open arms of a Daddy who is thrilled that His child has come home, would it be easier to run to Him?
As a Christian, FREE means that I am set free from the power and penalty of a life that was in bondage to sin and death.
FREE means that I don’t have to fight alone.
FREE means that I have been made perfect, even if I don’t feel like it.
FREE means that I am loved, and cherished, and chosen, and helped, and equipped, and…well, you get the idea.
John 8:36 (NLT) states: So if the Son sets you free, you are truly free.
And believe me, that means more to me than getting FREE shipping on anything I could ever order.
If you would like to learn more about the Father who loves you, the Saviour who died for you, and the Spirit who wants to strengthen you, say this:
“I don’t really get all of this stuff, God. But, I know I need something more in my life than I have right now. Will You make yourself real to me?”
