Something quite addictive happens when you allow yourself to settle in to your dream of the future. When you really begin to nestle down into the possibilities, an entirely new universe opens up to you.
Dreams and aspirations set us apart from all of God's other creation. We not only have the ability to DREAM but also the ability to bring those dreams to pass. I have long believed that you can have or do anything you want to have or do - IF you are willing to do the work it requires.
Some of those dreams and aspirations may pass with time - but who knows. Anything is possible to the one who believes - right?
"A person's purpose is to become the best-version-of-himself or herself." Matthew Kelly in "the dream manager"
There is also something terrifying about dreaming if you've ever experienced real disappointment and heartache from an unrealized dream. The Bible says in Proverbs 13:12:
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a dream fulfilled is a tree of life. NLT
I'm Not the Only One
Dreamers get a bad rap. We're often told to "get our head out of the clouds and our feet back onto the ground". Songs are written about dreams and dreamers. I bet you could name one or two and we could sing along together. [Here's a link to a page I found with songs that have Dream in the title!]
But without dreamers, the modern conveniences we enjoy would not even exist. I mean, can you really function without your cell phone? Honestly, I can remember a conversation with my husband where we talked about how ridiculous it was to have a phone with you all of the time. Now, we each have a cell phone, a tablet and a computer! Thank you Cell Phone Dreamers! And what about all of those apps we tap-tap-tap all day and all night? Thank you Software Developers.
Consider the power of an Einstein to change the course of history. Or Tim Berners Lee who developed the "http protocol" so that you can find this website and every other website around the world.
Do you love chocolate chip cookies? You can thank Ruth Wakefield for dreaming them up.
Ever heard of Heddy Lamar? She was a famous actress in the early days of cinema. Yet, she was also an inventor who along with George Athniel developed a way to spy on the Nazi's during WWII.
More practically, do you like turning on the windshield wipers in your vehicle during a pouring rain - or when that idiot splashes you AFTER the rain? Mary Anderson received a patent for windshield wipers in 1903!

But what about you and your dream? You may think that what is in your heart to build or create isn't on the same level as the light bulb, windshield wipers, spy technology or chocolate chip cookies. But the truth is, you never know the impact your idea, your hopes and dreams, your vision - will make on the world.
I've Got That Joy, Joy, Joy, Joy Down in My Heart!
There are women out there changing the world every day. YOU are already one of them.
In the little things we do daily, we shift and transform the world around us. We influence behaviors and attitudes. We train children, educate employees, determine policy, vote our conscience, and open the way for advances in belief, thought, and action each and every day. The trouble is, we don't see that what we do in our day to day lives matters much. So, when we have a BIG DREAM, we figure there really isn't a foundation for it and we let it drift into the air.
Last year, the movie Joy was released. It is about Joy Mangano. (Another dreamer, Jennifer Lawrence, portrayed her.) Joy Mangano's claim to fame comes about because she was frustrated over - wait for it - mopping!
Enter - The Miracle Mop. Joy Mangano and company have now sold over $3 BILLION worth of products invented by answering the question we have every day, "How can this be easier?" I bet she's glad she didn't think the idea of a new kind of mop was a silly idea! Can you imagine how many dragons she had to face when it came to believing in herself enough to make it happen?
What dragons are you facing when it comes to seeing your dreams become reality?
Stop "Dragon" My Heart Around
In mythology, dragons represented a diabolical beast that came to destroy everything you hold dear. From out of nowhere, they would arrive to set homes, villages and loved ones on fire. There was absolutely no power to overcome the beasts - until a Dragon Slayer would appear. The townspeople would pay almost anything to have an answer to the question, "How do we stop an unstoppable dragon?".
It's likely that if you are a big dreamer, you have more than one dragon to battle. Do any of these sound familiar?
- Self Doubt
- Financial Backing
- Family and Friends
How do you combat something that a) makes you feel powerless; b) appears stronger than you; and, c) shows up when you feel the least prepared to battle? In my experience, I've discovered that the most powerful asset is either a support community that "gets" you, or a mentor/coach who empowers you.
We Are Family
In my early days as a dreamer, it seemed hard to find anyone who really understood what was hard for me to put into words. In the ministry, there was a big need to stay humble and on task. Saying I had big dreams for what God could do didn't really fit in with the particular community I was in. At least, not then. (Things have changed a lot.)
To be a woman with a preaching calling was a big no-no. I could be a support to my husband, or I could work with women or kids. Those were the limits. Because that was the only teaching I knew, I compromised what I felt in my spirit in order to meet the limitations of my denomination. It was only after moving to another church that I discovered something else might be possible.
When I began in business, I realized that most of the training was directed to men in leadership. I was so frustrated! I knew that women brought a lot of gifts and talents to the leadership table that were begin totally ignored or discounted. I didn't want a corner office. I wanted respect.
In both of those situations, I discovered groups of people - particularly women - who understood my challenge and were willing to talk about them and work through them. In the process, my skills were developed and strengthened, and I discovered my true calling - my "Miracle Mop" so to speak. That is, to provide an atmosphere, encouragement and training to help other women grow into the person they are meant to be. In my frustration over the way things happened in the everyday world, I realized that my dream was to support women to live out their dreams.
I have also experienced the power of 1-1 coaching and the difference it could make in my life. I accelerated my progress in my business. I was also able to help those I was in charge of helping accelerate their business.
Dre-e-e-e-eam, Dream, Dream, Dream
Nothing will change unless the dreamers keep dreaming.
Your vision - your mission - your passion are NECESSARY to the world. Today, someone is waiting for you to be faithful to your destiny and calling.
GRACE can be defined as the "supernatural ability and power to do what you have been called to do."
If you find that the dragons are too strong for you, I want to encourage you to remember this scripture verse from 2 Chronicles 16:9:
The LORD's eyes keep on roaming throughout the earth, looking for those whose hearts completely belong to him, so that he may strongly support them." ISV
Dwight L Moody is quoted as saying, “No one can sum up all God is able to accomplish through one solitary life, wholly yielded, adjusted, and obedient to Him.”
There is great power of transformation in believing in your dream. However, when you believe in the God of your dream - anything is possible.
As Henry David Thoreau said, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined."
