Fear Reveals Your Boundaries
Both of the terms Fear of Success and Fear of Failure are buzzwords in the entrepreneur's world of self-improvement.
On the surface, they appear to be opposites. Surely failure and success are two ends of the achievement scale. But what if they aren't?
They both describe the outer limits of our expectations. Similarly, they are the dotted line of what you believe is possible and probable.
For example, fear of failure carries with it a shame of not achieving personal hopes, goals, dreams and even needs.
Likewise, fear of success holds the question of how our friends and family will relate to us if we are successful. Along with that, our preconceived limitations of what we deserve tend do throw up barriers of whether we should want to do better, have more, or attain a higher position, greater power or more authority.
Frequently, Christians, and in particular Christian women, battle the desire for more. In fact, we often have a misconception that success, recognition, and influence are opposed to the Bible and humility.
Your unconscious fear boundaries are designed to keep you in line.
Consider this common phrase of my growing up years: "Don't act too big for your britches." In other words, don't act better than you are. Along with that "stay in your place" message was the dreaded situation of looking foolish if you stepped out of the approved pattern of behavior. Additionally, I was showered with the desire of loving, Depression-era parents who wanted more for their children than they had grown up with. Consequently, you can see what a treacherous wall confronted me in my journey to success.
You may have grown up with mixed messages, too. And unwittingly, you've adopted them as your own safety-fence. Do these sound familiar?
