Discernment

Discernment is a powerful word in the Christian world. Unfortunately, it really means we've judged something, and decide it doesn't add up to our opinion.

But here's what the word ACTUALLY means: to separate; to see, recognize, or apprehend.

In the Journey to Wholeness, discerning-discernment-creates the environment to step forward courageously.

The Choices We Make - Make Us

Picture this: you’re standing in front of a table with two plates. On one side is your favorite dessert, rich and indulgent, practically calling your name. On the other side is a perfectly balanced, nourishing meal, promising energy and well-being. You feel the tug-of-war within you—temptation on one side, wisdom on the other. Your hand hovers, caught in indecision. Sound familiar?

Now, imagine what it would feel like to move confidently. To choose, not with hesitation or fear, but with clarity. How empowering would it be to silence the inner noise and know—deep in your heart—that the decision you made aligns with who you are and where you’re headed?

This is the essence of discernment. It’s not about endless back-and-forth debates in your mind; it’s about separating truth from distraction, seeing the path clearly, and stepping forward with courage.

Let’s take a moment to explore how you can shift from stuck to secure, from hesitating to deciding with purpose. Because the truth is, clarity is already within your reach.

How long will you...

In 1 Kings 18:21, we see the prophet Elijah speaking (as always) directly and candidly to the people of Israel.

It's the famous scene of Elijah on Mount Carmel with the prophets of Baal and Asherah. 850 prophets who worshipped other gods. And Elijah.

The false prophets, wicked King Ahab, the rebellious children of Israel. And Elijah

And in true Elijah style, he says, "How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him."

In the Hebrew language, the word falter means to pass over, to hesitate, to skip, to limp, to hop, or to dance. Some versions use the word 'halt' instead of falter.

It's the picture of coming to a point of decision, and getting stuck.

Double-Souled Discernment

James 1:5-8 gives us a deeper understanding of the danger of staying stuck in two minds.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Consider this, double-minded having two-opinions.

And I would guess you could pull up to memory several times when decision making has left you feeling confused or unstable.

Unfortunately, this sets up an imposing line of Positive and Negative players line up to give you their opinion. And when it feels like a life-or-death decision, Fear adds its voice to the chorus. As a result, chaos and disorder ensue.

However, there is an answer, found right there in verse 5, ask God. Coupled with the caveat of verse 6-in faith. Because the promise is that the Lord will show you and me the correct path when we trust Him.

Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.
In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth [removing obstacles that block your way]. Proverbs 3:5-6 AMP

Yeah... but

It all sounds like spiritual platitudes and mumbo-jumbo when you're stuck, and afraid, and confused, and in a hurry. I know.

Yet, how do we get our brains to slow down long enough to hear the voice of the Holy One outside of all the voices of Positive, Negative, and Fear?

Here are a couple of things I've found helpful.

  • Write out the decision that needs to be made.
  • Use the concept of the Circle of Seven
  • Lay out the options before the Lord and ask Him to lead you. And trust He will.
  • Take one step of action toward what you hear in your heart from the Lord.

Basically, this does a few things. First, it slows down the process long enough to give you time to breathe. Next, it actively engages your brain and quiets the emotional storm running rampant. Third, it puts it in the hands of the One who knows the end from the beginning. Lastly, you have a tangible step to take out of the stuck place.

Beyond Natural Discernment

Obviously, there are natural and spiritual forces at work here, Lovely One.

Certainly it's good to use the natural tools. Equally, it's important to use spiritual tools as well.

When making decisions, it's helpful to ask, "What does the Bible say about this?". If there is an obvious answer, then the decision is made for you. If there isn't, discovering the principles around the choices can give clarity. And with clarity comes courage.

I remember Joyce Meyer telling the story of learning to hear God's voice. Her cry was, "God, what if I miss You?". His answer? "It's okay, Joyce. I know where you are."

Undeniably, it is comforting to know the Lord is in the middle of the decision-making process. You are not alone. I am not alone. Consider this: it's not so much about building your decision-making muscles, but about developing your trust muscles. Another minister (I wish I could remember his name!) said this, "your gifts are for others, wisdom is for you." And wisdom comes from the Lord.

He wants you to know clearly know His path for you. He wants you to walk it courageously. But He never meant for you to believe you have to walk it alone.
